Fussing over 40.

It feels like I was born yesterday. It feels surreal. It feels like happiness. God knows how I landed up at forty.. Its not that I am afraid of forty. But then so many people keep talking about forty like its a bad thing to cross the dreaded number.

You get asked so many questions, the stereotype is - did you get your eyesight checked ? They assume everyone gets a number, atleast farsighted at/ after forty. Who do you think you are to defy the laws of age forty? You might be in need of forty plus specs. Ohhh and how could you miss that....such a reckless mom. Whoa. Whats that to do with my motherhood. If you dont have kids then be ready for- how carefree you are sans kids...they start to wonder how you would manage your future kids. I mean Seriously.

Why is forty such a mid life crisis for some is beyond me. They must be having their reasons, I am sure. However, beacuse I have just crossed that threshold, I must say that nothing much has changed for me after forty. No explosions, no horns, no fangs. I unnecessarily worried in anticipation of some personal apocalypse to happen. Nothing happened besides my regular periods and the cramps which accompany them. I felt relieved.

Now people around me have locked target - age 50. Lol. So many of them start giving you advice on menopause, handling your finance for retirement, kids college. They never give up. All the ideas which never worked for them, for some unknown reason they think might work well for you.

Some people overdo sarcasm. They will compliment your husband telling him he doesnt look like he has two kids or better, he looks younger than his age. And then they will turn to you and just sigh as if you are not worth anything. And you being so naive were hoping to get an equal compliment if not better. They will look at you as if their vocab just went bankrupt and smile with sympathy. So I usually steer clear from bumping into such obnoxious aunties.

They think they are funny. You think they are rude. Like this one time, when I was travelling with my two daughters, I met a lady. A total stranger who asked me if I was my kids mom. Really. Now I get it, they both look like my hubby but that doesnt make me any less of their mother. Especially when they were yelling mom mom to get my attention. I wanted to ask the poor lady if she was deaf in both her ears but then I would have been more rude. So I decided to leave her to Karma.

No wonder we all fuss over our appearances and age. The importance of looking young and beautiful is so ingrained in us that we have no option but to be under its spell. But I am not complaining. I can be sometimes vain. And I am liking this stage too. It brings with it a new set of challenges and opportunities. Someone has said that women become more sagacious after forty. The problem is no woman ever goes over forty. Cheers!

Is your emotional bandwidth taking a dip?

Dont we all occassionally need a break from the daily grind? We sometimes are so emotionally drained that we cannot handle anything more. We exercise, eat nutritious food, sleep for more than six hours and still feel exhausted. Is it because there is too much on the plate? So much is expected from you. Kids want to play with you, hubby wants to know where his socks have disappeared for the 23rd time, you have to decide what you want to wear for work, inlaws just called to know when you can spend time with them, boss wants to know if you can prove your mettle and that he has not made a mistake by hiring a woman who has two kids and a lot going on with her. So many decisions. Small or not, doesn't matter. The fact that so many people are dependent on you for all the answers can be sometimes overwhelming. When as friends, women talk and share, they expect to get support from each other. They share stories and experiences and ask- what do you think? Am I doing the right thing....

Dad flying to London, made history!

My dad is aviophobic and so when he reached London, I heaved a sigh of relief. My parents were visiting my kid brother who is put up in London since last four years. He had been asking them to visit him since he shifted there. However it always felt on dads deaf ears. My dad has become a little bit socially awkward since past couple of years. He wasn't always like that though. I mean yes, he never liked to travel a lot. His definition of travel meant a twenty minutes ride to my place to meet his granddaughters. Apart from these visits he makes a couple of rounds to the doctors office and once in a blue moon visits his relatives and friends after a lot of pestering from mum. My mum likes to travel a lot. She is ever so excited about exploring new places. So this time around too dad had made it very clear that as he is scared of flying he wont join mum on her visit to London. My mother had to remind him that British Airways will be taking care of the flying part and all he h...

Why drinking tea won't change your skin colour.

It's not a secret that in our Indian society people still look at dusky skin colour with much disdain. They will talk about how progressive they are but at the same time twitch their nose at anyone who do not conform to their standards of beauty and intellect. People still think drinking tea which is dark in colour might literally change their skin colour. So the more you drink tea the duskier you become. I cant decide who is more stupider - the people who are perpetuating this to be true or the people who dont drink tea in the fear of getting duskier. Nothing could be more outlandish than a beverage getting to decide who can be fair and who cannot be fair. Furthermore someone needs to tell the dogmatics that the colour of the skin is different because of the melanin in our body which has changed and evolved according to the climatic conditions and relocation of our ancestors for their survival. Just because one is dark coloured you cannot differentiate him/her. The only ...
