The Power of Less

Today's life is fast and furious. People don't get enough time in a day to fit in all the things they want to do. However if one could change a 24 hour day into a 28 or a 30 hour day, nothing would change. We would still say - we dont get enough time. Too many things to do in too less of a time.So much to say, so much to eat, so much to do, so much to see and so on and so forth. In this world of abundance - where the per capita income has substantially increased in the last decade or so, people are spoiled for choices.

When you have too many options, your mind starts to play tricks with you. You don't know where to stop. Nothing seems to be good as there is always a better option available just round the corner. A better job, a better pay, a better vacation, a better boyfriend , a better spouse . Phew! The list is never ending. Your mind gets exhausted just thinking about it.

Once when my husband was pondering over the idea of gifting a tablet to our 7year old daughter , I thought if we really go ahead with the idea we will just be adding one more option to the already long list of options we are compelled to do in a day. And so we decided against it.
We thought why do we need to stimulate our minds all the time with so many gadgets and gizmos. Why can't we sit ,just sit and do nothing. But the idea of just sitting and doing nothing is not so glamorous . I feel if we sit and do nothing, we start thinking profoundly about our life, our situations, our ambitions. The bottom line is we think. This 'me time' becomes important if we want to retain some sanity from this frenetic pace of life.

All of us like to unwind in a different way. Earlier we used to meet up with friends and relatives, read books, go cycling, play ludo and cards. And in a way it was kind of therapeutic. But now with WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram..so many choices. Again my mind goes crazy. And all of the people seem to be so happy and having so much fun on these platforms, that we automatically think- what am I doing? Why am I not singing, dancing, rock climbing, partying or vacationing like all of them ? The question is - what is life if it does not depend on the liver. You never know what one is going through, to reach where they are. I think the best way to go about it is to declutter your thoughts, be a little less judgemental, a little less stuff to do in a day, a little less of options and a little less of a stress because of all the choices. Only If we could succeed in doing this, then we could unleash the power of Less.

Is your emotional bandwidth taking a dip?

Dont we all occassionally need a break from the daily grind? We sometimes are so emotionally drained that we cannot handle anything more. We exercise, eat nutritious food, sleep for more than six hours and still feel exhausted. Is it because there is too much on the plate? So much is expected from you. Kids want to play with you, hubby wants to know where his socks have disappeared for the 23rd time, you have to decide what you want to wear for work, inlaws just called to know when you can spend time with them, boss wants to know if you can prove your mettle and that he has not made a mistake by hiring a woman who has two kids and a lot going on with her. So many decisions. Small or not, doesn't matter. The fact that so many people are dependent on you for all the answers can be sometimes overwhelming. When as friends, women talk and share, they expect to get support from each other. They share stories and experiences and ask- what do you think? Am I doing the right thing....

Dad flying to London, made history!

My dad is aviophobic and so when he reached London, I heaved a sigh of relief. My parents were visiting my kid brother who is put up in London since last four years. He had been asking them to visit him since he shifted there. However it always felt on dads deaf ears. My dad has become a little bit socially awkward since past couple of years. He wasn't always like that though. I mean yes, he never liked to travel a lot. His definition of travel meant a twenty minutes ride to my place to meet his granddaughters. Apart from these visits he makes a couple of rounds to the doctors office and once in a blue moon visits his relatives and friends after a lot of pestering from mum. My mum likes to travel a lot. She is ever so excited about exploring new places. So this time around too dad had made it very clear that as he is scared of flying he wont join mum on her visit to London. My mother had to remind him that British Airways will be taking care of the flying part and all he h...

Why drinking tea won't change your skin colour.

It's not a secret that in our Indian society people still look at dusky skin colour with much disdain. They will talk about how progressive they are but at the same time twitch their nose at anyone who do not conform to their standards of beauty and intellect. People still think drinking tea which is dark in colour might literally change their skin colour. So the more you drink tea the duskier you become. I cant decide who is more stupider - the people who are perpetuating this to be true or the people who dont drink tea in the fear of getting duskier. Nothing could be more outlandish than a beverage getting to decide who can be fair and who cannot be fair. Furthermore someone needs to tell the dogmatics that the colour of the skin is different because of the melanin in our body which has changed and evolved according to the climatic conditions and relocation of our ancestors for their survival. Just because one is dark coloured you cannot differentiate him/her. The only ...
